Thank you, Jeffrey, for writing about this. I lived in the town of Marshall for decades, until almost exactly one year before Helene hit. I still live in WNC. My heart is broken. My sweet beloved town is in ruins. My friends there have lost everything, yet are so incredibly resilient. Those who lost everything helped others dig out. These mountain communities are tough!

I still haven't made my way up and over to Marshall since before the hurricane, but the videos people have shared are unreal. Just unbelievable. But I've also been so deeply moved to witness so many people (themselves in rough spots from the hurricane) banding together to help each other.
So many of our divisions or indifferences toward each other have been softened by mutual aid and lending helping hands. Mountain people ARE strong.
Our hearts are breaking over here.
